THE PALATINE GERMAN EXODUS TO AMERICA

Our Palatine German ancesters traveled in ships much like this one from Dutch Ports at the mouth of the Rhine to England and then to America. Conditions aboard these ships were horrible and more than a few died enroute. Many were destitute and upon arrival their services were sold to the highest bidder for a specified period of time to pay for their passage. Some were paid out by relatives, but many entered a period of "Bonded Servitude". The average being five years.
